Building markets is not marketing. In marketing, one is attempting to find individuals or businesses to purchase one's products. Market building is an attempt to improve the overall business climate by teaching and encouraging sound business practices, ethical business methods and personal integrity. It is based on the idea that a rising tide lifts all boats.
Too many of today's businessmen see their goal as success at the expense of all others. This is unsound. If you succeeded in destroying all other businesses, who would be left to buy your products or services?
We need to move back to the idea that lowest price is not synonymous with best price. The fact that someone is willing to sell an item a few cents cheaper is not sufficient reason to buy from them. What about sustainability? Will selling you that product at that price destroy them? Will it cause them to compromise on quality?
By basing our buying decisions on price only, we encourage poor quality, and drive reputable businesses under.
